Roe Deer

The roe deer is a native species throughout Europe and it is found in all regions of Hungary. The species has a very good adaptability, there is no hunting area in Hungary where there are no roe deer and at least 1 buck is not harvested every year.

The meadows of the vast forests of Somogy County or the Central Mountains have their bucks just as much as the endless meadows of the Great Plain and the urbanized border of Csepel Island, which is considered part of Budapest.

Hunting Roe Deer

Roe deer hunting typically takes place in two periods. The first is the spring period, at this time ground cover is still low, bucks are active, marking territories and displaying themselves well, in agricultural areas they are clearly visible among cereal crops.

The second period is the roe deer mating season, which lasts from the second week of July to 10 August. This is the prime roe buck hunting period, the buck respond well to calls and those who hunt roe deer during this season in Hungary can be part of particularly enjoyable hunts.

Roe deer hunting in a mid-mountainous or heavily forested area, where the number of roe deer is small, requires serious and persistent work, compared to the endless plains of the Great Plain where larger populations provide more frequent opportunities.

Roe Deer Hunting Season:

• buck: from 15 April until 30 September
• doe, fawn: from 1 September until 28 February
