be found across the entire territory of Hungary with significant variation in population sizes. Unfortunately, African swine fever has emerged in Hungary in recent years, causing major devastation in the eastern regions of the country while in the western regions, strict culling quotas set by the government have reduced populations. Wild boar have excellent reproductive capacity and can recover annually. Hunters should always check the local population status with hunting grounds, as once-legendary areas may no longer produce the same quality or quantity of game.

Wild Boar Hunting

The true wild boar hunting season is during the autumn and winter period. October and November mark the mating season, known as the "grunt" when excellent boars can be harvested during moonlit nights.

Winter is the time for driven hunts, a favourite form of hunting for many. The sight of a wild boar rushing towards hunters, driven by dogs, raises the adrenaline levels of even the most experienced sportsmen.

During drive hunts, the hunting area usually permits the harvesting of red and fallow deer hinds in addition to wild boar.

Wild boar are also hunted in boar enclosures, thanks to one of their natural traits, they can be easily trapped and caught, making it possible to catch them from open areas and relocate them to fenced hunting grounds.

This method is particularly important in hunting areas where the free range population is difficult to hunt and the population size is not large enough to hold successful driven hunts in open areas.

Enclosed wild boar hunts also offer a fantastic atmosphere, it is not uncommon for a group to harvest 100–150 boars in a single hunting day.
