Mouflon is not native to Hungary, the species is introduced from the islands of Corsica and Sardinia to European game parks. The species was introduced to Ghymes in Nitra County in Upper Hungary in the second half of the 19th century. From here, around the turn of the century, the growing population was transferred to other game parks of the country: to Füzérradvány, Bakonynána, Fehérvárcsurgó, Gyarmatpuszta and Kaposmérő. The current Hungarian mouflon population is descended from these early introductions.
The species is found in isolated patches in the Northern and Transdanubian Central Mountains and a smaller population in the Somogyi Hills. They particularly thrive in the Central Mountains region of Hungary, preferring higher elevations near the ridgelines.
Hunting of mouflon:
While mouflon rams can be hunted all year round, the prime season is October and November, during their rutting period, known in hunting terminology as mating call. The most suitable hunting method is stalking, which requires good physical endurance from the hunter.
Mouflon Hunting Season:
- Mouflon ram: all year round
- young ewe, fawn: from 1 September until 28 February
