The fallow deer is not a native game species; it was likely first introduced to Hungary in the 15th 16th century into game parks and in much later centuries we find mention of the fallow deer also setting foot in open areas. During the socialist era (1970–1989), fallow deer were introduced at 81 locations and as a result, it is now present in many hunting areas across the country.

The roe deer is a native species throughout Europe and it is found in all regions of Hungary. The species has a very good adaptability, there is no hunting area in Hungary where there are no roe deer and at least 1 buck is not harvested every year.

The meadows of the vast forests of Somogy County or the Central Mountains have their bucks just as much as the endless meadows of the Great Plain and the urbanized border of Csepel Island, which is considered part of Budapest.

The wild boar belongs to the Suidae family and is a game species widespread across Europe, Eurasia and North Africa. As an omnivore, its diet includes everything available in forests and agricultural lands, ranging from snails and acorns to fish and any kind of crop.

Mouflon is not native to Hungary, the species is introduced from the islands of Corsica and Sardinia to European game parks. The species was introduced to Ghymes in Nitra County in Upper Hungary in the second half of the 19th century. From here, around the turn of the century, the growing population was transferred to other game parks of the country: to Füzérradvány, Bakonynána, Fehérvárcsurgó, Gyarmatpuszta and Kaposmérő. The current Hungarian mouflon population is descended from these early introductions.

In Hungary, small game species are primarily native to lowland regions, particularly the Great Hungarian Plain (Alföld). Both the Small Plain (the area between Győr and Vienna) located near the western border and the Great Plain east of the Danube are traditional habitats for small game.
